Bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy is a common occurrence, and although it can be alarming, it is usually not a cause for concern. The most common cause of bleeding in the first trimester is a condition known as implantation bleeding, which occurs when the egg implants itself into the uterine wall. Other causes of first trimester bleeding include subchorionic hemorrhage, miscarriage, and ectopic pregnancy. In addition, bleeding in the first trimester can be caused by hormonal fluctuations, cervical irritation, or infection. Despite the potential causes, however, it is important to remember that the majority of first trimester bleeding is benign and resolves itself quickly. Consequently, although it may be alarming, it is usually best to not worry and to follow up with a doctor or midwife if the bleeding persists.
